Five Essential Functions of the Cohesive Effective Team

Connections Inc. Leadership Development Seminar outline for 2019

Purpose Statement
Workplace managers and supervisors need knowledge and skills to lead collaborative and productive teams. Workplace leaders also need the tools and language to redirect personal distractions and problems away from work to employee assistance resources. Connections Inc. EAP Leadership Development seminars stimulate growth in supervisory competence and confidence. Even the best teams often struggle. A brilliant and talented individual appears counter-productive. The problem too often becomes a pattern. The pattern becomes an expectation and it is written off as ‘Oh, that’s just John (or Jill)!’
Patrick Lencioni in his introduction to The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, 2002 says “If you could get all the people in an organization rowing in the same direction, you could dominate any industry, in any market, against any competition, any time!”

Objectives. Participating Leadership staff will:

  1. Articulate the hierarchy of essential cohesive and effective team functions.
  2. Participate in a team assessment evaluating function/dysfunction on each of five levels.
  3. Self-evaluate for patterns of dysfunction related to:
    • Invulnerability
    • Artificial Harmony
    • Ambiguity
    • Low Standards
    • Status & Ego
  4. Tune in to ‘avoiding the difficult conversation’ and other behavior management disasters.
  5. Identify work performance problems and personal dysfunctions most often related to substance abuse.
  6. Practice effective and ethical workplace intervention with troubled employees.
